Other system transfers not working

Weird one....
I call my Ameriprise guy, and enter his extension. Their system confirms that I was extension blah-blah-blah and I hit 1. I then get dead air.
If I call from my cell phone and do the exact same procedure, I hear his phone ring and then get his voicemail.
I've noticed similar things on other automated attendants on the other end.
Is this a common thing that (hopefully) has a common answer?

Found a fix that worked for me. Added this to my outbound trunk:

rfc2833compensate=yes

It tells Asterisk 1.4 to handle DTMF like Asterisk 1.2 expects (that's really boiled down).
