As I create a new page group and drag extensions into it, the max number of extensions seems to be 40 although there is no documentation to suggest this. Can anyone confirm?

Usually once you hit 40 everyone here will suggest multicast page groups. This is because the way page groups work is by creating a conference and inviting everyone into it. Which at 40 participants can be extremely taxing on the system

1. I am running on an i7 cpu, 16g ram, ssd drive, 1Gb lan etc so can the 40 ext limit be removed manually somehow by a config file?
2. Multicast paging doesnt use the PBX, right?

We dont suggest going above 40 extensions regardless of hardware but yes you can change the limit in the Advanced Settings Module

If you use multicast it is not using asterisk to create a conference and uses next to no resources on the CPU, you do need to have phones that support multicast and or you can connect a sip paging adapter for over head speakers, I have used the Snom adapter and it works well.
