so my pbx machine locked up this morning and since i wasnt there to lookand see if anything was out of whack. i had to have it rebooted. now it is fine.i am still working so i can not go look at anything right this minute. but is there a way to see what happened by looking back in a log???what did happen just to let you know was. i mad a call in, used DISA to call out through IVR and was on hold like 20 minutes then everything was dead. tried calling back in on numerous numbers that goto the box and none of them would ring to IVR or they would show not connected.thanks for any help in leading me in the right direction.

Look at the logs in:

/var/log/asterisk/full

and probably need to look at the previous set

/var/log/asterisk/full.1

Have you installed anything special on the box other than stock (no addons)?

Probably would be a good idea to have some proactive monitoring in place (we use nagios). We also always set up some type of remote access so we can ssh into the box to look around.

There is nothing worse than having a customer's phone system go down and not being able to get in until after hours. It directly affects their bottom line. I hope you find out what the problem is before it happens again.

so it just happened again. the only thing that was recently installed was the new update to webmeet me. also i can not reach my machine via web accesss at all

also. when i rebooted the machine yesterday morn. which it did it this morning as well... everything was fine the rest of the day and night.plus i can not connect to it now...crazy stuff

Ok.... and what have you found out? What did the logs show? Did you go by there last night?

Do you have a backup of the machine prior to adding the new web meetme?

How long has the pbx been in service?

Please tell us that you don't have the pbx available through the web. Is it behind a firewall, is there no vpn?

Describe your setup for us.
Number of Phones
Server
FXO card
Network (VOIP separate from regular data network?)

More details are needed

From the info you have provided thus far it could be one of a million things causing problems

well i have a crappy linksys router with a firewall. i am only forwarding the 5000 range and 10000-20000 range to it. however if i type in my FQDN in a browers with a /admin i get a promptb for my pbx... wtf.....also the machine is a super crappy old p 3 866

Well that is a little bit of info but, you still are not giving us the information we need. Go back and re-read my post.

To be honest your setup seems a little scary. Based off your comments you appear to have port 80 forwarded to the pbx. That is a big no no. You need to secure your connection

It is pretty easy to ssh to port 9022 and setup tunnelling from the putty session to allow you a secure connection to the web interface, but you appear to have larger problems at the moment. How many phones are hanging off this system and what type of pstn are you using........

i seem to have a huge. i am working now. so i cant really check the logs. however when i log in to the pbx through a web interface and see the box and lookv at the system status. it shows 3 phones up. nothing is connected right now. everything is done from my home pc or my laptop as far as softphones and hard desktop phones r still in the box..... time to rebuild it seems. and i think i'll upgrade it to one if the p4 1.7's or higher i got layin round.i did setup a sunday weekly backup. also will i be able to do a base install and then use my backup to restore all of the custom things i did???

We still don't have enough information here to help you. Is port 80 open to the Internet. Is SSH open to the Internet. Is fail2ban running properly.

Help us help you.

port 80 was pointing at it. which was sorta obvious as i could get to it from a web browser from my phone. i killed that and am going to start a whole new box on a p4 1.7 i got laying around and switch up all the extensions and passwords wor everything.

any quick tips on gettings everything i have been working for the past few weeks over to a new machine quickly?...

i also am now home and getting ready to look into the logs now.

as far as time up... a few weeks, work in progress for my work at home business.

SSH is not open to the internet. i would like to and vpn into this box from my cell phone which has the ability to do that.

Fail2Ban shows when i SSH from home that it is running

UPDATE-

i have a copy of the log below. also the only other thing i did was follow the guide for music on hold and that is the only 2 things i can remember doing.
the music only hold with a extension for it as well as the new update for the Web MeetMe..

basically this is the whole section that once i made the call starting at the first part of this, that is the call that got jacked up and everyhting went to dead air. i hung up and tried to call back and the system was off ine for about 2 hours till i had someone at home reboot the machine

looks like the machine is dying. so my question is now. can i use the hard drive from there in a different machine and just configure the graphics card a nic and so on?

i have a backup of the old machine that keeps locking up from about a week ago. nothing has changed really as far as that goes.

the reason i am wondering about this is because last night i built a new machine.

used the same trunk settings, outbound routes and so on. and seem to not be quite as far as with the other machine. i am referring to as far as calling out and having the IVR answer and so on.

it would be much easier to just use the old image or backup from the old machine.

if someone could maybe give me the steps to do that i would greatly appreciate it.

This solution makes the assumption that the hard drive isn't the problem. What makes you so sure? :confused5:

ward;

just a hunch.

also i was trying to troubleshoot this issue. so i rebooted the machine 30-60 minutes ago. then have only 1 phone (nortel i2004) register to it. changed all of the passowrd for the VM as well as the extension itself. rebooted. then waited about 20 minutes or so and made a few minute call. once i did this, after just a fewbreif moments on the nortel i2004 phone, dead air. same thing to the test caller. they called back and said it just dropped the call.

went to the basement, looked at the machine to see if i could get any status from it (i.e. nic lights red or something) and everything appeared to be fine.

could not locally SSH to it or use a browser to get to it. had to unplug it.

running a restore from last weeks backup.

any ideas to through my way??????

ok so here is the log from /var/log/asterisk/full

this is from the time i made the call from the nortel i2004 until it went dead.

then i went to the basement and pulled it and started back up.

i did however do a restore from last week andd just made a 8 minute call. i need to test further but i would assume it had something to do with the MOH streaming or something of that nature. that is all i have tried to get orking over the past week. and of course with no luck either.

Ward;

although that still puts me back to the whole..... can i just swap the hard drive to another faster machine type question. and/or can i do some sort of backup and restore it to a different machine?????

so the restore i thought worked. however i was wrong. i am wondering if the failed SIP attempts from voipdiscount is somehow affecting this and making the machine lockup.

side note..... or question rather. can i swap the hard drive into another machine and see if that solves the problem?
