I've recently received calls from "Microsoft Technical Support" (in India, I'm sure) reporting that my Dell computer is sending messages, and causing problems on the Internet. Sure ... and I have a bridge in London that I'd like to sell you! I thought I'd try to have a little fun with the caller, so I engaged the caller for a little while, asking "which computer are you calling about?" and "what is the host name for the computer?" and "what is the IP address that you're receiving the errant messages from?" The caller hung up!

We've all received, or at least heard about SCAM calls with similar messages. To be sure, I'm not so gullible to think that it's a legitimate caller who also claims to be a part of the "Microsoft Security Society" or something like that! Oh, the stories that the scammers do dream up ... and so sorry for those who fall for them.

But, I do have a question concerning how to block these calls:
The most recent call shows up in the CDR as "Anonymous" <Anonymous>. Is it possible to use the "built-in" Blacklist function of PIAF to blacklist calls identified as "Anonymous" ... or must the entry into this PIAF feature be numeric?

On your inbound route, you could use Privacy Manager. It will prompt the user to enter their telephone number before completing the call if no callerid is received.

Thanks, I like that idea and will give it a try.

However, unless I'm missing something obvious, in this situation it appears that the caller ID information is coming in as "Anonymous"<Anonymous> instead of reporting the "callerIDname"<number>. It's as if the caller has substituted "Anonymous" as the number in their out going calls.

Thanks for the tip!

There's a checkbox to block Anonymous callers when you blacklist your first number.

But, won't this also block callers who have chosen to withhold their Caller ID? ie., either withheld by default or the caller has dialed *67 before placing the call. I'd accept a recording that will inform the caller that they need to unblock (*82) their call in order for their call to be connected.

Blacklist is great but for some reason for me if I have the number in the list and they call the phones will ring once then stop. I guess its the lag in the determining the CID? Is there a timer that could be set to give the software a bit more time to get the CID so the phones don't ring at all?
