PIAF on Proxmox - Bad Sound Quality

Hi

I have a proxmox server running with only two instances of pbxinaflash, both of which have a handful of call going through. Yet sound quality is an issue. My understanding is that it should really run beautifully on proxmox so it should be possible. It's pure VOIP by the way, no dahdi involved.

The server is a Xeon entry level with 4 GB of RAM. I will increase the RAM to 8 once we actually get it to work without hassles, but for its current config the 4 GB should be sufficient I would think?

Any ideas where to start looking? I have never had to deal with bad sound issues, as all our other server simply worked from day one.

Thanks

Hi Ward!

Not entirely sure what settings you are after. I have allocated 1GB to each instance of pbxinaflash and 100GB space (simply because I have so much :-). I used the centos-5.5-purple1.8.2.1-piaf_1.7.5.5.4-1_amd64.tar.gz template.

Thanks!

Try doing a KVM install from the stock ISO instead of using an OpenVZ template and see if that doesn't improve things. :wink5: Please report your findings either way. Thanks.

Thanks!

Busy downloading it (and then uploading it to our server) - I cannot seem to find a way to download it directly onto the proxmox server. If there is, enlighten me pls?

Cheers

Ward: THANKS - that did the trick. Any wisdom as to why that made a difference though?

Sircolin: THANKS - save me the uploading part!

Now that I am utilising it - any ideas as to how I would know when I am overloading the box with too many virtual instances? I understand I can look at the proxmox interface and look at the ram utilisation, but any hints as to how to make an informed decision would be appreciated!

The generally accepted view for servers is that when you get to 50% capacity, it is time to double capacity.

From comments on this forum, I understand the main issue to be IO delays.

Also, one memory/Processor hungry app on the PBX is FOP, turn it off in amportal - it looks like it is going anyway. In tests a few years ago on an lightweight PBX it was worth about 100 concurrent calls.

Thanks Joe

Hi Joe,

I have already followed your advice about FOP from a previous encounter! Thanks.

I am trying to get my mind around exactly what to look for when you say 50% capacity? How do I measure that, what exactly do I look for?

Cheers

Hi

Not too helpful answer - but it depends!

You need to look at memory usage and processor and disk space usage, as well as IO, which is shown on the home page, as well as ensuring that each individual container is not exceeding its quota causing poor sound quality. However the stats here are fairly broad brush, and ultimately, it is going to be a "wet finger in the air" as to whether to add memory, hard drives, or a whole new server.

You could add Munin to your Proxmox server, which will add more metrics. It's in the repository.

Hi

I can get my hands on some beautiful Dell poweredge 1850 servers. They do not have VT support though and therefore they will only run with a template.

Remember I had issues with the template regarding sound. Was I just unlucky with the other one and should the templates work fine, or is using a template generally troublesome? before I dig into my pockets to get those machines I'd love to hear some success stories with a templates? This will be purely VOIP - no zap/dahdi involved.

Thanks again for all the input.
