Hello. After having success with the "Green" release I thought that I'd make another.
Well...... No.

It appears to go well, linux is loaded, and after reboot and login I select green, etc and the system says "We are downloading the load files from our mirrors..." and shows a bar graph progress indicator.
This indicator apparently means nothing, as it goes for an hour or more with no activity on the ethernet. Disconnecting the ethernet also has no effect.

Are the mirrors down? Should there be some indication of what's actually happening somewhere so that I don't waste hours hoping that there is some kind of progress here? Is there a log that I can tail to really know what's happening (or not happening in this case)?

Thanks for your thoughts on this!

I've also noticed that the download progress indicator doesn't seem to reflect actual progress some of the time. Paging darmock for further feedback.

It looks like the hostname doesn't resolve anymore nerdvittles.dreamhosters.com, at least from here.

JoeTalbot Not sure where you are geographically, but from the ATL it resolves. What are you using for your DNS Servers?
Code:
Rosss-iMac:~ ross$ dig nerdvittles.dreamhoster.com

I found the log wget-log. I'm going to try some other dns servers... At one point it looks like it started grabbing it, then timed out. The net has been ULTRA flakey for the past 48 hours for several reasons.

The DHCP server handed out the caching dns server in Tomato. I never trust those. I just put 8.8.8.8 in and it now resolves, but still fails to download. I'm now rebooting.

I'm watching the traffic on the ethernet via tcpdump. It goes to wards site for a few things at the beginning, but then starts to fail when it goes to apache2.hln.dreamhost.com (or something very close to that name). Then it just quits trying, all the while showing you the phony status bar.

Where are the Internet Police when we need them? I'm sure Comcast will fix it.

any minute now... We've had a cable cut. We've had the *&^&%ing World Cup streaming... We've had AT&T who can't keep their copper working. I just had my wireless provider go out for half an hour because of a thunder storm. I have three types of internet here (DSL, Cable and Wireless).

I guess that I can't count on this any more. If I pay you, can you send me a disk that will work?

It's working now. We've been having weird problems with multiple providers peering all day long. Crazy huge packet loss. Timeouts. You name it. Looking at sites using MTR shows some pretty crazy net behavior today
.

the progress bar simply reflects that wget is running in the background and does not actually reflect the. byte by byte download. oddly the download program does check to see if the files are available and wget is set to error out after a certain number of tries however wget has been known to go into an endless loop when the way internet becomes flakey. no solution for this error however our download methodology has been used for years and there have been few reports like this.
