I'm a complete noob on this. I used to have a computer with asterisk set up that allowed me to receive calls. A friend of mine and I worked to make that part function. We could never get outgoing calls to work, however incoming calls worked fine. That's all good until recently when Sipgate notified us that they were discontinuing their service as of the end of October, 2013. This meant I had to revisit this project.

I have a couple unused raspberry pis so I decided to look up how to get that installed. I found nerdvittles pages on how to get the install done and I followed those instructions to the T.

At this point I can make outgoing calls through google voice, however I cannot receive incoming calls. I've a tiny business that allows me to subsist from month to month so I have to keep the costs down.

I've read that it is important (don't know if that is still true), that the gv number be dedicated to the task, so that's what I've done. The google voice number is only used with the raspberry pi setup.

I really need help on this and I'm a complete and utter noob. My goal isn't to become an expert at asterisk. It is just to get this to work, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Does someone have a step by step guide or some information on how I can determine the cause of the failed incoming calls? I can handle myself at the command line in Linux and know how to ssh into the pi and get around.

Edit 1:

Let me further elaborate that I have a PAP2 adapter connected to a cordless phone. That's the phone that doesn't ring. It is also the only phone connected -- no software phone. I can pick that phone up, get a dial tone, and make a call.

Edit 2:

I just installed a soft phone (sip) and was successful at making an outgoing call, however, no incoming calls.

In the Google Voice settings (voice.google.com), what is set as the call destination?

Also, not only the google voice number to be dedicated but the entire google account. you need to be logged out of that account on all devices and browsers.

To reiterate what PBX@Home stated - if you have any device logged into the account other than the RPi, the RPi won't ring the phone. Each time I had issues with google voice, other devices being logged in was the cause.

I found out what it was. It was sort of 2 fold (actually 3 fold but I'm tired and I can't remember the 3rd contributor).

Primarily it had to do with the PAP2 adapter. It has 2 ports for connecting up phones. One line was set to log into the 701 extension with a port of 5060. I decided, since I had another base station with a set of cordless phones (which would make it easier if they were active to answer calls as I moved around my place), to set that up on the second line and log it in to the asterisk server on the same extension 701 with the same port. When I did that nothing would ring in. I decided to eliminate that and to reboot and test.

The second problem was not giving Google enough time to respond after rebooting when making a test call.

EDIT: The third issue was:

I don't know if anyone knows how to overcome one issue that I found that affected me, and likely many others. If you have a Google account that does not end in @gmail.com (say [email protected]) the configuration will not connect to Google voice. Anyone have any thoughts on making that work? Yes, you can create a Google account with a non-Google email address.

P.S. I found that you don't have to be logged out of your google voice account nor gmail account in order to make it work properly. I often forget and hear my browser ring before my cell and the phone connected to the PBX.

Edit: Another issue that crops up here is that when the google account name based off a legit gmail address has a period (.) in the name it will show that it has connected but nothing will ring through. I tested this with two different accounts with names in them. So, a name with [email protected] will not ring back. You can make outgoing calls with the number but you won't receive any incoming calls. This is something I'd like to see worked out but it is also an FYI to future readers trying to figure some of this out.
