I have a system that I run in a school that every so often somehow seems to shut down. I'm not sure what the issue is - I think it's sometimes the power, sometimes it gets unplugged accidentally, etc.
It's not a high demand system, and it's not a huge deal if it sometimes goes down, so I'm not going to focus on that now.
My problem is that I'll be going out of town for a few weeks, and I need a way to remotely start the system up if it turns off.
It's on a local network with a computer or two that are always on (or at least more reliably than the server :wink5:), running Windows, and accessible via remote login.
Is there any way to remotely start the system up, either via some remote way, or by remotely logging in to one of the local computers and running something from there?
Thanks a lot!

If the computer supports WOL then you just log into another computer and send the magic packet . . .

Hi

At risk of stating the obvious, this does need to be fixed, and there are some good suggestions above, however, I had a similar problem. In this case, it was simply overheating, and shutting itself down to protect itself. A new fan, clean with an air-duster, and remove all the boxes and paper work round it, and it was as good as gold.

Setting the BIOS to have it boot as soon as it is plugged back in will help so if it does get unplugged....

gotta love how things always get stored around important equipment. I was recently doing a broadband install and a cutover at a very nice womens clothing store here and was to mount / install all the new equpiment in there nice data cabinet. problem was that all of the women working there had their purses stored in it along with other "women'ly" items. and of course a roll or two of receipt paper for the registers. Kinda funny how things like $500 data racks can be used for so much more and cause us problems....

If you have a true server-class machine, you should see if it supports IPMI. Typically, you can power OFF and ON, read fan status, temperature, and several other tidbits. :)

You just have to make sure you have it configured before deployment as it does require some set-up.
