Remove name from directory

Is there a way to remove a phones name off the directory list, its seems to be linked to the display name of the phone which is manditory when adding a phone through freepbx, I have looked through the files using command line to see if I can remove the name that way but I can not find the link between the display name & the extension, has anyone managed to do this.
