After going back and forth the last couple of years the ISP decided to stick with double NAT which broke the ability to run an OpenVPN server and connect remotely. For a mere $15/month a static IP is available! They're the only player around. Combine that with a new position offering travel outside the US and it's time to ask about a cloud hosted VitalPBX to use while on the road, and an OpenVPN server to connect back to home for files.

Based on the great forums here and the NerdVittles articles I'm thinking a $5/month Vultr instance and using some FQDNs from FreeDNS would get me on the way. Would anyone have other recommendations?

Hi Chris,
A couple of other things to consider. Neorouter is an excellent vpn and Ward has some tutorials for it. For tutorials go to nerdvittles.com and search for neorouter. Don't forget about backups. Although not all services are free, changeip.com offers dns, dynamic dns, dns management. For the non free services the fees are reasonable.

I'd be inclined to put things in the cloud as well, either using Neorouter or OpenVPN to connect.

Also IAX2 will traverse double NAT if you prefer to not have to doctor too much.
