Hi there. I ran setup-samba script, and changed the smb.conf to the name of workgroup that we use. I can see "in show computeres in the workgroup" the PIAF server thought Windows XP, but I can´t access it. The message show that the server is not acessible, may you do not have permissions. The net path was not found.

Anything to do in smb.conf? Sorry the newbie question, but I just begin to use UNIX machines. This is my smb.conf

[global]
workgroup = NOHAD
server string = PBX in a Flash
local master = no
domain master = no
preferred master = no
password server = None
guest ok = yes
guest account = root
security = SHARE
dns proxy = no
[share]
path = /
guest ok = yes
writeable = yes
create mask = 0777

Thankx
Mauro

Turn off iptables first 8^) use the disable-iptables then try. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes after this to announce itself on the local workgroup.

Tom, Thank for your replay. I did the disable-iptables and it didn´t help. Something else to try? I have no permition remains.

samaba stuff

This sometimes happens you can try the following

1. Run setup-samba again

2. Reboot the machine

3. after reboot go into webmin from another computer and go to servers - Samba Windows File Sharing

4. You should see the share named share in the upper window with the path / and Security is Read/write to everyone.

5. Now click on the Windows Networking Button You will want to change the workgroup to your local windows workgroup. My Linux server on my network acts as a WINS server so I generally point the PIAF box to it. If you don't have a WINS server on your network then click Be WINS server under the WINS mode. I also change the server description and server name to a single word all in lower case.... (Don't ask me why it just seems to work better this way) The rest of the defaults are fine. Click the save button

6. Return to the Samba menu and you will see a button near the bottom Restart Samba Servers. Single left click on it and then close webmin.

7. I assume you are trying to connect ot your PIAF box from a windows something machine. Open a command prompt/dos prompt on you Win machine and type

net use Q: \\ipaddressofpiaf\share

This should connect up with no problems. If not reboot your PIAF system and try again. Q: can be any unused drive letter on your windows machine.

If you are trying to browse from a windows machine to your PIAF machine it sometimes takes 10 minutes or longer for the PIAF system to appear. This was shortened considerably when I replaced my Windows 2008 server (god I hate MS stuff) with Centos5.1 server 8^) The Centos5.1 server is running Samaba and also the Domain master and master browser 8^) Works much better than server 03/08 ever did and provides full connectivity for files and printers.

I have had to redo these steps once or twice on a problematic PIAF install but eventually it became stable....

Now it´s ok. I re-run setup-samba, then I folow your 1st advise:

Turn off iptables first 8^) use the disable-iptables then try. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes after this to announce itself on the local workgroup.

Then I wait a lot to try again to connect. I begin to work in another thing. When I come back: Voilá I was able to see the server.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Regards
Mauro
