Rule #1: Protect Your PBX With IPtables.

Just wondering if there is a for dummies guide for this one?

The Nerd Vittles listing just says to use it as rule #1 but does not really tell how to use it, or exactly what it allows me, or dont allow others to do.

From the sound, If you are not listed in a table of IP numbers, then you can not access the voip server.
that would leave me to wonder, does that mean, to access the pc its running on, or to even allow a sip phone to connect from outside the firewall.
and that, leads me to ask. if one of the sip phones you want to access with from outside the firewall, dont have a static ip address, then where would you go from there?

Wondering

Thanks for your respnose.

Unfortunately, neither of these solutions is viable for me. as the external (dynamic) extensions will not be tech-able users.

Real or soft phones?

If soft use vpn (aka hamachi) and pipe thru 5.x.x.x address

Some of the hardware phones support vpn also.

I am just playing with a hard phone that has IAX built in. seems to work better than sip

I am using Real phones,,,

never noticed if the phone itself supports IAX or just sip.

Most hard phones only support sip. Some support sip connections thru openvpn but are a pain to set up.

IAX works easier

the ATCOM 530 works fine. You can also use an IAX box to do your connectivity such as the

AG188N

Which is an IAX to analog phone adapter. We use this in several of our satellite offices with a standard phone.
