spoke with a cable company yesterday about setting up a piaf server with their sip trunks. They claim that the standard Linksys wrt54g type router will not work with their system. since they use what they called "peer to peer" and not sip registration, the nat in the router is not sip aware so will not work. They claim I will be able to make outbound calls fine but will not be able to receive inbound calls. Anyone ever heard of such a thing? As long as I port forward the proper ports, set my externip= variable, and set the trunk to 'nat', I've never had a problem. What are they talking about?

I'd wonder the same thing, but remember... these are the same people that say you can't use CableCard with a PC under any circustances because it's not approved (which is why Media Center folks just say they have a Tivo to receive the CableCard as mandated by the FCC), and it works just fine. I've got absolutely zero confidence in all of the cable companies (having worked with just about all of them), and plus they're late to the game with SIP trunking anyways... so they really don't have a clue. Just tell them you have a 'super duper' $500 router and to simply tell you what they require from you to work with their service. If it doesn't work w/ a WRT, then so be it... but that'd shock me.

You say tomatoe, I say tomato.... err, dd-wrt.

You will have to set your firewall to forward 5060 to your box. Depending on your router you should be able to filter to just their IP block and not be open to the world.

I, too, would be surprised if this didn't work. I have had telephone companies just plain lie to me, not even having a clue they were wrong. Find out what router they recommend and be ready to buy one if your Linksys doesn't work.

My money is on, it will work.
