Is there any way to add SMS functionality to PIAF? I'd like to send and receive SMS to sip extensions. Has anyone done any work on this? There are some articles on the web if you google it but we never got it to work.

Voip-info.org has has limited info on sms. There are a few free sms gateways. Maybe a module could be created that accesse there service?

Here's a list of email to sms gateways. Basically, they send a SMS message to indicate that an email has arrived for you. That's what the Rogers service did. Bit of a pain as you have to reply with a text message that says "Read" then the email arrives.

Sorry couldn't stop. The Mbuni project is an opensoure MMS gateway. MMS is the multi media successor to SMS. It seems pretty interesting as it is made to interface with IP.

I guess it really depends on what you want SMS and Asterisk to do. Currently, I don't believe SIP phones support SMS and they don't have a way of displaying it (correct me if I'm wrong). Then the options are to have something like a FreePBX module (web GUI) that can send and receive SMS messages. Or to send a txt message through email.

Poor Man's SMS

Virtually all of the carriers provide an SMS-Email Gateway for sending SMS messages via email. The trick is knowing the email domain for your desired carrier. And, even if you don't, nothing keeps you from sending the same email to a dozen different gateways knowing that one of them is probably right. :wink5:

The full list is available here. And here is an even newer Email to SMS Gateway list.

Thanks guys but all these links use a cellphone to send or receive SMS. We want to receive SMS to an Asterisk extension and then send it to a cell phone.

I don't believe that Asterisk is there yet. Have you tried just forwarding a call to see what happens?

SMS hasn't been implemented into Asterisk that's why the plethora of SMS info in reply to the initial posting. I don't know if Asterisk can forward SMS as it uses several different proprietary protocols that depend on the provider. From what I've read, it goes like this:

Cell Phone => SMS Center (SMSC) using proprietary protocols like SMPP, CIMD, OIS, SMS2000, etc..

Between SMS Center (SMSC), SMS Gateways are used to transcode between protocols and to connect to service providers.

Incredible PBX has had it for years using Google Voice. The GoIP device can do it. Anveo can do it. les.net can do it. Probably others.

Hey Ward. I am using GV trunks. Is there someplace where there are some instructions for setting this up?
I'm not blind, I've just on over load at the moment.
Thanks again for your help.

oh... ok.
So it's nerdvittle sms and not

PIAF sms
or IncrediblePBX sms
or Google Voice trunk use as SMS
or ANY ONE of a thousand other possible queries

EXCUSE me for being stupid
