Ok, so I'm not looking to transcribe text messages. I'm simply trying to figure out how to send an SMS through an Asterisk extension and be able to reply to it

I don't know about replying, but IIRC there was a web GUI that Ward made that allowed for SMS messaging. Or are you talking about messaging between extensions?

Well, I'd like to just be able to load the sip account on my sip phone and send an sms message, to another extension or to any other DID.

Google Voice has a nifty web interface that I can always use to send SMS messages if I want to go that direction, I'm just trying to figure out if it's possible to do, and/or even worth the effort.

I am using google voice trunks at the moment, and considering that is all slated to be gone in 10 weeks, I'm not terribly invested in getting it to work on that route.

Oh. That's quite different. There's an RFC for it. It also appears that Anveo supports SMS over SIP (RX only, TX via HTTP). They do provide instructions for use with Asterisk. There's also this resource that I found that looks promising.

Vitelity also has SMS with its DIDs. You might want to think future wise about one of these other carriers besides Google Voice as there's a chance that they will not be offering their free service forever.
