source14.conf out of date

I had to update my 1.4 PIAF system today. I then followed the standard procedure:

update-scripts
update-fixes
update-source
update-fixes

However, update-source repeatedly failed with:
update-source: line 1769: $LOGDORNAME: ambiguous redirect

It turned out that Digium not any longer provide a *-current link to Asterisk-1.4 and addons. When I changed the source14.conf file to

ASTERISK="asterisk-1.4.42"
ADDONS="asterisk-addons-1.4.13"

the update worked and I was able to get back up without any problems. I was under the impression that 1.4 is still supported, but it appears that the source14.conf file has fallen behind. I'm concerned that next time I run update-scripts it will overwrite my modified source14.conf.

Is it possible to get an update to the 1.4 scripts?

You are using a Pbx in a Flash version prior to 1.7.5.X which has not been supported for quite a while now and has been deprecated.

As having been outlined many many many times in our forums

1. There is NO reason to run any of the update-xxxxx programs routinely EVER!

2. The 1.4/1.6 branches of asterisk are no longer under active new development at all. They are in security fix mode only until April 2012. This was decided by Digium and is beyond our control.

3. PBX in a Flash only develops for our versions 1.7.5.X and newer. The older version you are using have been archived on glass and put away. We keep the last version available for people who have not upgraded to the current supported version of PIAF.

4. You really need to install PBX in a Flash 1.7.5.7.X. I would also recommend choosing our "purple" version. This gives you Asterisk 1.8 which both PIAF and Digium actively develop for.

5. There is no *upgrade* path at all between 1.4 and 1.8. You could try to upgrade your fpbx to 2.8.1.4 on your original pbx and then make a backup under fpbx. Then install a fresh copy of PBX in a Flash 1.7.5.7.X (X being the current ISO release) and then try to do a restore. YMMV.

6. Glad to know the old stuff is still working. Because PIAF is unfunded we have to put our limited resources on our current builds both stable and alpha.

Tom, Thank you for the clarification. Since our PIAF works well, there has been no reason for us to upgrade, which speaks well about PIAF!.

I'm also painfully aware of the upgrade limitation. Since PIAF is running my business, an upgrade will have to be done during a holiday break where we have a some buffer if something doesn't work quite right (which of course never happens ). The plan was to wait until we could go to CentOS 6.x as this would simplify our infrastructure. (We have converted some of our systems to CentOS 6 already and appreciate the upgrades to KVM)

Your advise was to go to Purple. Is there any version I could migrate to that runs under CentOS 6.x? The reason is of course to avoid having to upgrade again for at least 5 years.

As I have seen you pointing out many times, phone systems are different than computers. They just got to work and the less changes and tinkering, the better. Again, thank you for putting together such a stable product that we have been able to successfully run for a long time!

A couple of points. (pardon my rambling)

1. There is no stable version of PIAF under Centos 6 yet... We just reached the alpha 1 milestone yesterday. with PBX in a Flash 2.0.6.1. We now have a booting ISO under centos 6 that runs both purple/red. We are still chasing down bugs as there are a few nasties under centos 6 that did not exist under centos 5.7. The list on the whiteboard is pretty long.

I understand people may be holding off until it is out prior to doing any major updates but it may take a while. Unfortunately one of the wrinkles is that PIAF 2.0.6.x has to be built on either a 32 or 64 bit Centos 6 build machine running on *real* hardware. (sorry but prox or xen virtual machines just don't cut it...) We need a couple of new boxes in the lab in order to accomplish this and we need some donations as we are an unfunded project.

We also need to keep the existing build structure for PIAF 1.7.5.X so we can't repurpose those machines.

We have had a few donations which went towards a new xen server and some more "exotic" sip/iax phones for testing (Thanks to everyone for those!) This has helped with testing and QA enormously! We also have some XEN only stuff in the works for PBX in a Flash which the new server has made possible.

Unfortunately the lack of hardware is slowing down development for Centos 6 stuff. 2 of these machines

would go a long way to getting PBX in a Flash 2.0.6.1 out the door in a timely fashion. Course would need to upgrade the boxes to 4gb ram but we could fund that internally...

2. Yes I rant about not touching your system sorry..... I spent some time in my career doing help desk type work and developed a severe allergy to people mucking about with things. The average windoze user seems to want to always fiddle with stuff and upgrade constantly.... of course this shows how unstable windoze can be. Linux systems rarely need this unless there is a *proven* *required* security upgrade needed. However to paraphrase one of my favorite authors "Computers are like dandruff. Most people have them and derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it."

3. I suppose most of us at PIAF have the attitude that we like to develop stuff built on the premise that it works out of the box and once it is set up and running that it is so stable we dont hear from you again until you want to install the next generation of it. This is the opposite of "commercial stuff" where we want you to visit us all the time so we can bill you for it.

So

- you can wait for PIAF 2.0.6.x (it will be a while due to our current hardware shortage). Also 2.0.6.1 will be an *experimental* build for a bit as we will be adding new features to it so it may be unstable until we reach the release version.

- you can install PIAF 1.7.5.7.2. It works! It is solid! It is proven! I would not worry about Centos 5.7. It will be around and stable for a while.

Good information Tom,

Since I'm using the software for my business, I don't mind supporting your effort. Don't know if my small contribution today made a difference, but I hope everyone reading this (and want the new version) do the right thing and donate to this project as well.

Just a thought, there may be more people out there like me that didn't know your needs. Crowd sourcing is becoming a very popular funding avenue. If all the businesses that are running your distribution would contribute say $100 I would think that you would have your hardware in no time. Would it be possible to put a banner on your site (like Wikipedia) to make people aware of the situation?

Again, thank you for all your FREE effort!
