Other than running my IT company, I own ATMs that I have at a concert venue. Because of various reasons, (actually not the economy) I am going to remove 3 ATMs from that facility and start "traveling" the ATMs to different festivals, shows, etc.

I know that I was going to have to set these ATMs up for a cellular connection so they can dial out to the processor. Maybe it was me being out in the sun today but I had a strange thought that I need some help either shooting down or verifying the possibility.

I have a PIAF system at my office that has enough lines to handle the ATMs that would travel. I could get a wireless data card from either Verizon or AT&T that would connect to something like a Linksys WRT54G3G to give me cellular data access to the internet. Then use a FXS box like the Grandtream one that has 4 analog ports to change the ATM analog lines to data (or another one that would do a better protocol). Connect the Grandstream device back to my PIAF box via either a VPN or something else. Then have my office phone system complete the calls back to the processor.

The "known" way to do it would be to buy an industry specific converter for analog to cellular (approx $400 each ATM) and a data plan from another industry specific provider per ATM.

For my idea, are there any pitfalls that I am not thinking of other than making sure there is a good cellular signal for the internet connection. Or if someone can better complete my thoughts on how exactly to make this happen, I would be thankful.

Thanks again,
Andy

Not sure if I completely get everything, but there are routers made by a few companies (consumer level) that can use sim cards or the pc cards for notebooks for inet access. Problem is some providers, just as T-mo, block voip to my knowledge.

Hi

I suspect that this issue is going to be that in the same way that Fax over VoIP can be tricky, using what effectively is a Modem over VoIP is going to be harder, and the data rates negotiated are probably going to be very slow.

For the price of an ATA, you could try it, but I suspect you may be better off with a GSM / Analogue gateway, and even then, the data rates may be slow.
