Suggestions for Alternate IAX Ports

Hello,

My daughter is away at college. We had a sip softphone that works everywhere else but at her school. It appears that port 83 is blocked and so Traveling man is out.

We then setup an IAX softphone and that works great even better than sip just about everywhere except at her school which apparently also blocks port 4569...

Apparently youtube, is not blocked and most other sites are available, but from what I can determine, peer-to-peer sites are blocked.

The IP address for my server does not appear to be blocked but access to port 83 and 4569 are blocked by her school. What other port(s) would one suggest to try to link to IAX so that she can register and make calls through my pbx? I don't think that forwarding port 80 would be a good idea...

Hamachi tunnels thru most blockages.

install-hamachi om your pbx and then install the client on your daughters machine then join a common cloud point her softphone to your asterisk's hamachi address and it just works.

Provides you a virtual network inside of a secure tunnel with all the ports open. I use it all the time when on the road to connect to my pbx and also do maintenance on it.

I could never get Hamachi to work. But, OpenVPN running on the pbx works just fine too. I followed the how-to that is posted on the forum here, and use the Windows client located here.
On your home side you'd need to forward (by default) UDP port 1194 to your pbx. On the college side, hopefully they don't block outbound 1194. You could always change it to run on 80 on your side if they do block it.
