This week, I received a phone message from the Canada Revenue Agency Tax Dept (Canadian version of the IRS) from a Mr. Dale Aujla at callerID 604-951-5660 and to call back at 1-855-587-2258. Any ideas on how to trace the calls back to the registered owners?

The person was very professional, he asked me to verify my identity so that he could go on with the investigation. So I gave him my birthdate, address and SIN number (equivalent to social security number). As soon as the SIN number was out of my mouth, I realized what a fool I was and started asking him questions as to his identity. He started hemming and hawing and said that the SIN number didn't match the investigation and cut the call short.

So I've been spending the day, informing my bank, credit card, setting up credit alerts, etc.. :(

It will almost certainly be a toll free number purchased with a fake identity and falsified credit card. So even if you track it down it'll be a dead end.

These vishing attempts are quite common; always just go to the web site of the people that called you and use that number to return the call.

However, law enforcement can track it down. Report it here:

The RCMP (and other agencies) can use quick court orders to get the toll free number shut down, or get the FBI involved if the RESPORG for the toll free is in the US.

Thanks, I've put in a report there already. Also created credit alerts with Equifax and TransUnion, updated my bank and credit card with alerts. Couldn't find out where the number originated from. Seems that it is too easy to hide your identity now with telephone numbers...
