Trunk line cards

Do people find in general that trunk line cards (ie Digium, Sangoma, Rhino, etc) require tuning of the rxgain / txgain when they have error correction enabled or do they generally just work for everyone out of the box?

I'm having some hassles with the analog trunks (and cards, one Sangoma and one Rhino) I am hooking up to (nothing major, minor annoyances) which I didn't see on the PRI Sangoma card I used. It would be helpful to have an idea of whether it's commonly required or not.

You don't 'tune' PRI's. They're digital.

Generally speaking they just work. I personally prefer Sangoma for quality and technical reasons (you can actually see what's going on with a PRI at the network level with a Sangoma card due to the way they designed their card).

Probably the only variable with a PRI is the LBO setting. This is used for telling the equipment how much cable is between you and the CPE. If it's under 133', (40M or so) don't worry about it.

Sorry - I meant for standard POTS lines, not PRI's. You're right that the PRI install I did worked perfectly right away, but none of the analog lines have.

In that case, it depends on the application.

For voice, I never usually have to do anything with the Sangoma, Rhino and Xorcom's I've put out there.

However, if you're talking about faxing or modems, that's a different story... I always run fxotune on those setups.

By default, for dahdi at least, fxotune is run whenever the server is rebooted. It's part of the initialization. It may be run when dadhi services are restarted also - I don't remember off hand.

I use zaptel for everything still (Gold install). However looking at the zaptel startup script I see it call fxotune -s; however, I had not run the fxotune setup (whoops).

When I ran it the response was:

So I interpret this to mean lines 1 and 3 needed fairly serious adjustment, which explains why the complaints were fairly intermittant.
