Tom, Ward et. al.,

I have a box that was originally installed from a PIAF 1.2 CD. The last time I ran update-fixes was 20080927. The system is running fine but I'd like to install a couple of new things like the HylaFAX/AvantFAX packages and also make sure I have the latest fail2ban etc. I figure it makes sense to do an update before adding some of the new add-ons.

I remember reading some warnings last fall that Tom put up about not updating because of some Digium shenanigans or whatever.

This is a 32-bit, Asterisk 1.4 install which is actually running on a 64-Bit Sempron based machine. Here is part of the status output:

********************************************************************
* Running Asterisk Version : Asterisk 1.4.20
* Asterisk Source Version : 1.4.20
* Zaptel Source Version : 1.4.11
* Libpri Source Version : 1.4.4
* Addons Source Version : 1.4.6
********************************************************************
CentOS release 5 (Final) - 32 Bit ** Kernel: 2.6.18-53.1.14.el5
********************************************************************

Latest FreePBX 2.5.x updates are applied. My question is would it be kosher to do a update-script, update-fixes, update-source regime on this box? If so I believe that should bring it up PIAF 1.4 equivalent right?

Thanx,

Dallas

Should but make backups just in case. I have done a similar procedure on my commercial clients and only one failed due to the client getting and and changing things around on the box without telling me.... hehe no longer my client I punted him.

Make sure you only upgrade to the "frozen" version of 1.4 which is a choice in the upgrade-source. If you decide to go into the latest version of the 1.4 tree you will be switching to dahdi.

I am tired of whining about dahdi however when the full version of 1.5 of PIAF is released later in the summer you will have the choice of 3 versions to install. The Asterisk 1.4 version that uses zaptel, the Asterisk 1.4 version that uses Dadhi, or the Asterisk 1.6 version that only uses Dahdi.

Thanx T

Appreciate the reply Tom. I'm of your way of thinking about upgrades in general and I'd definitely go with the 'frozen' 1.4 stream. Particularly since I don't want to upset the apple cart vis-a-vis my Rhino drivers. It's workin' good now so I don't want to even think about going to Dahdi.

I do a weekly Mondo backup of the system so worst case I could fallback to that. I'll also do a FreePBX backup as well before trying it.

I had good success upgrading a 1.1 system recently using a FreePBX backup following a scratch 1.4 install. Feeling pretty confident after that one.
