FOOD FOR THOUGHT Upgrade PIAF 20644 to 20650?

Hi all,
my asterisk will be in production environment in about two weeks, but before it, I'd like to upgrade to the latest piaf release.
Is it suffice to issue update-scripts & update-programs?? In this manner Asterisk 11.5 will updated to 11.6?

As Tom stated in another thread their is no way to upgrade PBXiaF between minor CentOS releases and you need to do a reinstall. Running update-scripts will only upgrade asterisk and dahdi not any of the other 500 packages that make up your PBX.

There isn't really a need to upgrade unless you absolutely will die without a feature in the new versions.

The CentOS project does not offer any of the various approaches to extended life for an earlier point release which its upstream occasionally does for its subscribing clientèle. Once a new point release is issued (say: 6.3, following 6.2), no further source packages (from which updates can be built) are released for the earlier version and therefore CentOS is no longer able to produce security or other updates.

Preston you beat me to a response.

This means if you are on CentOS 6.4 and do not update to 6.5 you will never get updates for security or bug fixes. This is very dangerous since the average person leaves way to much of their PBX exposed to the outside world. As a company that has supported and managed well over 10,000 PBX's this is really bad advice. You NEED to keep your PBX updated or it will cost you.

Also features are rarely introduced in sub-releases. Only bug and security fixes so not sure why you are saying only upgrade if you need a feature since the core OS wont generally give new features tell the next major release such as CentOS 7.0 comes out.

This is why we always provide upgrades scripts for the FreePBX Distro for every release and rarely do we ever hear someone say it broke something,

Well actually he is asking about upgrading Asterisk. I suspect he is asking 2 different questions

The current release of Asterisk for new installs is 11.7. If you have an older version of piaf then you can use update-source to install the latest asterisk/dahdi/etc source, just edit /etc/digiumsource.conf, and have it compiled correctly. If you need to update from Centos 6.4 to 6.5 then you will have to wait till update-source has been updated to provide you with a method to go between minor updates. Beyond that you can do what you like to your system as it is your system.... Once the os upgrade feature is release you can do whatever you want or you can simply do a hand upgrade and away you go. Opinions are like dandruff... most people have one and gain considerable enjoyment from telling everyone about it.....

Automatic upgrades by Centos are something we DONT support. Manual upgrades by the users IS something we support.

I have no issues with someone having to upgrade manually but the comment made by others of do not upgrade unless their is a feature you need is wrong info since CentOS upgrades do not introduce new features GENERALLY between minor releases. Just bug and security fixes. Just want to clear up that mis-information as its wrong and goes against what CentOS states everywhere.

This is one of those instances where the forum isn't the best communications vehicle. I don't think any of us disagree on the need to address CentOS exploits. In fact, there have been at least a dozen patches in update-fixes to address these. I think the concern is with just random use of yum update because of the CentOS habit of pushing out an entirely new release through the yum update mechanism. This has broken things for us many, many times. SO... yes, we all agree on the need to immediately address exploits. We monitor dozens of security sites regularly. But we like to test updates first, and we prefer our alternative mechanism to keep systems safe, secure... and functional.
