We currently have a PBX in production that we would like to uprgade to Asterisk 1.8.8.1. Our current version is not allowing faxes to pass through. The IT department at our SIP provider recommended this upgrade and advised us that 1.8.8.1 is the best version for faxing.

My question is if we can upgrade the version of Asterisk without losing our config and other data.

Here is where we are now :

PBX in a Flash PURPLE x
x PIAF Installed Version = 2.0.6.2 Running on *HARDWARE* x
x FreePBX Version = 2.8.1.4 x
x Running Asterisk Version = 1.8.8.0 x
x Asterisk Source Version = 1.8.8.0 x
x Dahdi Source Version = 2.6.0+2.6.0 x
x Libpri Source Version = 1.4.12 x
x IP Address = 10.1.1.101 on eth0 x
x Operating System = CentOS release 6.2 (Final) x
x Kernel Version = 2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.i686 - 32 Bit x

yes

BUT

Before doing any upgrades ensure you have a working VERIFIED backup. Both Whole disk and freepbx. (I am just reworking the incredible backup for 206X)

THEN

1. update-programs

2. edit /etc/pbx/digiumsource.conf and change the asterisk version to 1.8.8.1

3. run update-source. Pay particular attention to the legal agreement and the fact this program is, and always will be, classified as EXPERIMENTAL.

4. There is a portion in the program that asks about downloading the very latest version of digiumsource.conf. Please ensure you DO NOT UPDATE THIS FILE. If you do it will reset back the to current default version which is 1.8.8.0

5. DO NOT UPGRADE WITH YUM or DO KERNEL UPDATES. There is no good reason to do this. We look at every update that comes down the pipeline every day and so far we have NOT found one that needs to be implemented on a 20621 based system. If there is we will let everyone know.

6. As update-source progresses it will install the latest versions of stuff as defined in the digiumsource.conf.

7. You really do need to reboot after update-source finishes.

8. That is it. If something foobars then restore from your working and tested whole disk backup (You do test your backup right?)
