I need a specific 800 toll free number that when I do a RespOrg search on it it shows "Verizon LEC NXNY1" is the owner. Which I assume is actually an old NYNEX/ATT assigned number. When I call the number it plays back that it's not in service.

I've called about six different Verizon departments to see if I can get this number or open a Verizon account to acquire it. So far no one has been able to help except an overpromising sales person that cannot deliver.

Does anyone have experience with this or have a Verizon wireline contact back east?

You might look into getting a Virtual Office space in NYC. Then get an NYC number and this 800 ordered and installed in the Virtual Space (Regus might be an option). Once you have control over it and it's been active for say 45 to 60 days, more than one billing period, you should then be able to port it where you want.

But I have to ask in this day and age, why an 800 ? Says the owner of multiple 800s and their corresponding seven digit local numbers . 800/770 123-1234. I have had them for ever (~1990) and I actually used one from a hotel not to long ago during a forced overnight caused by a flight diversion. Wonders of Wonders it worked :-)

Unfortunately I've never been successful in retrieving unused toll free numbers from the ILEC's (Verizon, AT&T etc). Getting to someone who can actually figure out what that number was for, if its available and agreeing to move it to you has for me proven impossible the couple times I've tried it (once with Verizon and once with AT&T); even with enterprise contacts. The usual response is "that number is not available"; all they are doing is checking the SMS800 database, and that is all they seem to be able to do, even for disconnected numbers.

My client is an older gentlemen that is starting a new side business and wants a 800 number. It told him 833 & 877 are available but he wants 800.
