What are the pros/cons of using asterisk ODBC VS. Having asterisk call up a php file?

UnixODBC and CentOS when combined with either Asterisk Realtime, or saving VM to a database rather than the file system, seems to be comprehensively screwed, at least i have not got it to work, but I have done deployments in Fedora and Debian using unixODBC for realtime and VM.
In respect of your question, addressing the database in the dial plan is quite easy, and seems to be quite fast.
