When 7920 Boots, it Kills My Other Ciscos

I have a very bizarre problem. I've acquired a 7920 to play with and spent a great deal of time getting SCCP to work on my PIAF server and even though I can't figure out how to get it to grab a line, it does actually connect and register with the server.

The problem is that my other Cisco phones, all 7970's running SIP and grabbing their configs via t*f*t*p all die when the 7920 connects.

It always happens at the same spot, when the 7920 gets to "configuring IP network", i can just watch the phone on my desk reboot and go into hung state of trying to confgure the IP, and as soon as I turn off the 7920 the 7970's come back up again.

I figured the IP was stomping on the address of another phone but that's not it, all addresses are getting picked up by DHCP and are verified unique.

My other SIP phones seem to work (Polycomm, SIP soft clients), it just seems to be Cisco related.

Any clues?

It's likely some kind of malformed broadcast traffic doing it. Have you tried a tcpdump or wireshark / tshark to have a look at what traffic gets sent by the 7920?

Wireshark is probably the best. Install it on a Windows PC that's on the same LAN segment as the 7970, start a capture running, and then boot the phone. It will capture all traffic, and you can then analyze what is being sent.

What version of SCCP are you running?

Personally I would like to help you to get ALL of your phones running SCCP as it is SOOO MUCH better than SIP!

I'm leaning that way as well but I haven't been able to figure out how to have my 7970G log into two different servers, one for my home and one for my office over a VPN. This works great on SIP but it doesn't look very simple to do over SCCP.

I downloaded the latest release on sourceforge, 3.0 RC3

Why do you say that SCCP (skinny) is better than SIP?

I only prefer SCCP over SIP when it comes to Cisco phones because Cisco purposely makes a crappy SIP firmware. It's slow and hard to use, when you go to the Skinny firmware it's back to being fast.
