That was my thought as well (DECT limitation). It makes the most sense...
 
Since this is one of the top results when searching about the DP715/DP710 and intercom. I just got a DP715 and it does not support auto answer for intercom/paging. The auto answer function that it does support is when picking up the handset from the base during an incoming call. Such a bummer, I got this to use mainly for intercom throughout our house.
