Correct.
Ahh...
Did you set the fqdn in /etc/sysconfig/network?

Correct.
FQDN in that file is "pbx.mydomain.com", yes.Ahh...

FQDN in that file is "pbx.mydomain.com", yes.
What's the output of these commands...
hostname
hostname -d
hostname returns "pbx.mydomain.com". hostname -d returns "mydomain.com".
I didn't have anything under address mappings, but there was the default mail alias for "root" there, which I've now deleted. Sendmail was stopped (since I didn't want things hitting the smarthost in the configuration it was in), so I restarted it after deleting the root entry. Saw a few things in the mail queue that went out. Voicemail-to-email notification went out successfully, then a slew of root emails tried hitting the smarthost as well. However, since they were in queue it may have not been respecting the new condition.Ok, everything is setup correctly... After, re-reading your first post, I think I finally understand what you want to do...
In Webmin, under sendmail, have you configured any "mail aliases" or "address mappings"? The only way you can prevent "root" emails from leaving through the smart host, is to eliminate any aliasing of the root email account, so it'll be delivered to the local root email address.
