Hi all!

I've got my system humming along all nice and smooth with several phones and softphones when I realize I'm using ulaw and haven't switched to a more efficient codec. So I imported the G729 codec (from http://asterisk.hosting.lv/) and everything works now except for X-Lite. I guess it doesn't have G729 support. From what I've read, people say I need the paid version. I don't see a paid version, so I suppose they're referring to eyebeam or Bria.

Others have said to use X-Pro, but I can't get it to talk to my PIAF box. It keeps saying there is a firewall blocking it, but X-Lite can get through. I've tried a few others, but to no luck.

Anyone have any experience with a softphone that supports G729? I'd prefer free, but I'll take one with a free trial. Or what to set on X-Pro to make it work since it looks like it'll support the G729?

Hi
g729 is a paid for license, whether it is Asterisk, or a Softphone. The fact that someone has reverse engineered it, or you can download it for educational purposes is immaterial.

Hence, you are unlikely to find a phone free of charge that includes the g729 codec.

You may try the Eyebeam, which seems to work well, but frankly does not seem to offer much more that xlite, other than extra codecs.

Eyebeam may be fine. X-lite seemed to work well. What I'm looking for doesn't need to be free. I know g729 is licensed and has a fee, but I just want to try one before I plop down some cash on it, hence my hope for one with a trial period. 1 week, 1 month, I don't care. I just want to test one before I use it.

Or maybe not Counterpath at all! I'm open to ideas. I've only been working on this for a few months. Some people here have tons of experience with it over several years. Maybe they've found an excellent phone. That's what I'm looking for. A good softphone.
