SSH, HTTP not working [solved]

I have an odd problem I wondered if anyone had any insight into. I setup a new Purple PBIAF about ten days ago (this is the one I had the nightmare with IAX trunks on - it seems to be cursed) on a Dell GX280.

For some reason, I can not reach the server via SSH and HTTP from time to time on my network (the desktop hosting it previously was in use without incident). The phones still work, incoming calls work, and so on, but I can't manage the system.

I'll leave it for a few minutes, then everything starts working again.

My best guess is a hardware problem of some sort but it seems odd the phones would continue to work if that was the problem. I've tried simpler things like ethernet cables, switches, etc (though the phones still work so not sure how that could be). I also tried disabling fail2ban and iptables (since its behind a firewall anyway).

What log could I look at for this? The asterisk log shows everything is fine (ie no errors).

Out of curiosity can you reach freepbx and then click on a few entries and then does freepbx stop responding?

Interesting. I am running up against this with brand new hardware on a purple install.

Intel D510 with 2gb + SSD + tdm410 card..... I get to a certain point in configuring freepbx and freepbx will no longer respond. You can reboot and then browse to FPBX and select anything once and it then becomes unresponsive. Already tried randomizing order of fpbx config. nothing in any logs at all. However ssh works fine and all phones work fine....

Also ran several different "burn in testers" for the hardware to ensure no bad stuff.... crap I can even install win7 ultimate on the thing......

A real puzzler

It's only mildly annoying at this point. I'm going to keep looking at it but it makes no sense at all that ping and SSH and HTTP (Freepbx) quit, but the phones are all fine.

Interestingly also when connected to the console by a real keyboard and mouse (I KNOW!) i can ping out no problem.

I would have thought iptables or fail2ban, but I disabled those to see what happened and nothing. I'm wondering if the NIC driver has something wrong with it now. I think it's a broadcom and the earlier versions of those were crap.

A quick google shows some people commenting on network oddities on this Dell GX280 computer, but that may be coincidental.

I might try updating the network driver. I don't know how to do that in Linux (still a noob) but I will figure it out.

The network card is definately flapping. I'm wondering if this is a problem with the driver for this in the CentOS version on purple. It could also be an interaction between the driver and netgear switches I use at home. I'm going to stick a different network card in there tomorrow (need to find one been a long time since I needed one) and see what happens.

Best Buy still sells network cards.

Pay for a network card? Don't be ridiculous. I must have one around here somewhere :-)

I wonder if the NIC's PCI IRQ is being shared or causing the problem

Could be. I'll hook it back up to a console tonight before installing the new network card and see if I fiddle with the IRQ's what happens.

The network card was the problem. I suspect blanchae is right; it's actually an IRQ problem since the NIC was working fine in Windows prior to being pushed into service as my home pbx. However, I'm not good enough at fooling with IRQ's in Linux to fix it, so I simply stuck in a Dlink one I found. All is well with the world; SSH and HTTP working beautifully (and seemingly faster, which seems strange, but there you go).
