Hmmmmm...

Thanks for all the comments. We froze at 1.4.21.1 because it was the last to support zaptel. I see one of you seem to be running the current release of 1.4 with zaptel. I sure would like to know how you did that. When I attempted to compile zaptel under the next few releases after 21.1 it failed quite miserably. For the one running the current version of 1.4 with zaptel I would like to ssh into your machine if possible and verify the mechanism that got it working again. Please PM me.

Admirable sentiments that unfortunately get mired in the real world. Ward and I have had much communication with Digium over the years we have been doing this with minimal results. Cooperation tends to work both ways so draw your own conclusions. Our loyalty lies with our users I am afraid rather than Digium. I suppose this breaks all of the ideals of your point of view but it is the only one we have at the moment.

As for testing... we have a number of test systems real and virtual that run in the lab(s) Generally everything is tested on virtual and then moved over to real hardware for further testing and then propagated to PIAF space. and yes all of the versions get tested on real hardware with real fxo/fxs/et al cards in them. Luckily we have had some generous donors over the years who have provided us with extra cards to go in our lab machines. (Openvox to name one great corporate sponsor) Sure wish we could get a set of the current crop of digium cards but.........

As for freepbx I run the latest on my personal pbx which I use a long term test bed so far so good with some hiccups here and there. Once we consider it stable it will be included in the load files.

Lastly "Doing it our way" Yep you are right. I seem to remember you were a big greenie supporter but everyone is welcome here. Improvements are always welcome and the tools to do it are built into every PIAF system so Please have at it and contribute back.

Tom

Bingo! Still scratching my head as to how we've held anyone back. It isn't like some distributions where you're always waiting on the development team to spoon feed you the next great ISO. :cryin:

Best of Both worlds ?

I certainly appreciate the cautiousness, as I am probably not the greatest PIAF troubleshooter.
Others want the bleeding edge and dont mind quirkiness.
I think the strength of PIAF is that the upgrade process to newer versions of asterisk, etc is quite easy so the adventurous can go their own way.

Also, glad to hear PIAF works great with the newer Asterisk versions. :D

Many thanks for PIAF

I started with the "greenbox" but after repeated strangeness and very little actual help (remember the tb forum war?), I found nerdvittles and have been happily rock solid since. As a PC guy I appreciate bleeding edge and all, but phones are expected to just work. Production systems should be able to run without constant tinkering or updates. Having sold Altigen, 3com, and Cisco, I've found PIAF to be very robust, stable and feature-rich. </rant>

Seriously, thanks all!

No I don't, and that's one of the reasons I went my own way after Trixbox rose from AAH. I felt that the forums where aggressive, and impolite, and some members treated others with little respect.

We have pretty much succeeded in creating a polite, well mannered forum here, where members treat each other with respect, and for the main part, more focused on the technology than the politics, and long may that continue.

Any truculent comments regarding other entities do not help foster this relatively pleasant environment, and apart from which, make for tedious reading.

Blimey, I never meant to start a squabble about anything here,
Look, freepbxinaflash is great, no two ways about it this is solid, rock solid, and I rely on that for my business every single day, never has it let me down.
So lets be absolutely straight, I came here after seeing what was happening over at Trixbox and the kind of nasty back stabbing that went on over there.
THis is a great distro it's 100% Open and you get what is on the tin, no one is pretending it's the only show in town but it is just about the only rock solid 45 minute ASterisk setup out there.
These forums are open and they lack only one thing, back stabbing egotism, so I am really happy to hang around here. I no way meant to start a thread that causes any friction.
If I want an up to date asterisk I can build it myself, it will take a few days to get it right and yes I can do it, but I don't have the time and I need to have something that just works. This is it.
Thanks, everyone here, I am happy to wait for upgrades when the come.
Peace and good will.....

The current version of the 1.4 tree (1.4.26.2) What I refer to as a silver choice does work but uses Dahdi. Dahdi has improved to the point where it can be used but there are other issues now in the current 1.4 tree which makes it more unstable (my opinion) that the "gold standard".

there are still issues with Dahdi outside the USA - for instance unpatched it chokes on certain flavours of the line test signal British Telecom send down some UK phone lines in the middle of the night, and flags the lines as "red alarm/no battery" until its reset - a nasty surprise for a business to arrive to!

The patch that some brits have made is still waiting "review" and the issue has been there since last year.

This isn't the first time that Zaptel/DAHDI has fallen foul of this signal (one zaptel version segfaulted whenever it occured!)

yet its been in use since the 1980s and the characteristics of it are available on BT's web site - its actually a legal requirement telecoms equipment in this country should handle it..
